Who does not love a good treasure hunt! These are 4 brass plated items I could not resist.  Sometimes folks appreciate the patina from age on brass items…I do…but I always like to make sure that all my finds are cleaned before putting in our booths or offer for sell on our website.  This is one way I thought I would share how to do this without chemical products.

You will need:

  • Dawn Dish Washing Soap (blue preferred)
  • Container to hold water
  • Hot water
  • Soft rags
  • Wise Owl Furniture Salve or soft clear wax
  • Soft bristle toothbrush
  • 2″ chip brush

First you will need to determine whether your item is solid brass or a brass plated item since the way to clean these items differ. This is going to focus on how to clean brass plated items and the brass cleaning will be on a separate blog. All you need is a simple magnet. Place the magnet against the item and if it does not stick then it Is safe to assume that your item is brass plated.  Magnets do not stick to solid brass.

These items all tested to be brass plated.  The most important thing to remember when cleaning brass plated items is to not rub or polish too aggressively because you can remove the brass plating, so proceed slowly.

Simple cleaning with hot soapy water may be all you need but if really tarnished you may have to resort to commercial cleansers for brass plated items.  Next fill the container with a couple of squirts (I know scientific measurements) of Dawn dishwashing soap with enough hot water to completely cover the items and let soak for about 30 minutes.

Then gently use a soft bristle toothbrush for the crevices or fine details.  Rinse then dry completely using a soft rag!  After dry then use the 2″ chip brush to apply the furniture salve or soft wax to your item and wipe off with soft rag and gently buff to get a great shine and protect.

What a difference!

Now these are ready to head to the shops!

Hope you enjoyed the information and find it helpful.

Until next time….
